Livestock    and    Women    Livelihood

Field Surveys

The WSHGs members are grouped as better-off and poor within the group by wealth ranking by the member of the WSHGs and data was collected from the better-off group, poor group and the leaders separately.

101 Women self help groups involved in Livestock rearing spread across 5 states of South India were interviewed with the participation of the Research Partners. A total of 1198 Women whose livelihoods depend on livestock were interviewed and the livelihood status of the group, food security, status of livestock, knowledge on livestock rearing, social capital and details about WSHGs were mapped.

The project also designed a methodology of ranking the members within the WSHG based on wealth, through women participation. This also brought to light the presence of “poor” and “better off” within a WSHG. This is documented in a CD for the future use of students, researchers and practitioners and development (in Government and non government organizations).
